History
Our Stone Houses have a long history. Many of the stones that now form the cottages, we are told by the Archaeologists, come from the Mausoleum. They can be clearly seen as they are the large blocks which have been carefully "dressed" and are predominately in the lower part of the building. So the story begins 4.000 years ago.
The Romans contributed to the House. The Marble columns beside the swimming pool in the Stone House come from that era. We found them in the ground during the building work.
These houses were built for the officer class of the Ottoman Empire in the middle of the nineteenth century.
When these houses were built Bodrum was a small insignificant village making a living predominately from sponge diving, fishing and olives. It had an interesting ruined castle and the remains of the Mausoleum but nobody in the Ottoman Empire was much worried about ancient ruins. There were lots of them.
The Tower and Lemon House are one of only 11 houses called Musandirali houses - which the authorities have declared are of special architectural and historical merit. The Houses have been supervised by the Ministry of Culture who impose strict standards for all workmanship. All the stonework, woodwork and layouts have to be authorised and checked by the Ministry.
They are important because at the time they were built by stone masons, who were particularly scarce. Consequently houses made from "dressed" stone were only for rich people and the officer class. The builders came from the Greek island of Crete and used a design that can be seen all over the Aegean.
The Stone House was restored in 2003 by a team of builders under the supervision of a renowned local architect Barut Berge. The consultant archaeologists from Bodrum Castle. Interior design is by Barut and Zafer Kustu.
